Illegal Aliens: Criminals or Economic Opportunists?

Author: Dallas Wilkinson

Are the illegal aliens our country is awash in criminals? Of course not they are merely economic opportunists, or in the current acceptable parlance, undocumented residents. They are no more criminals than a poacher who shoots game out of season. Such a person is merely an undocumented game control warden. Or, a driver who gets behind the wheel of a car without fastening their seat belt. Such a person is an undocumented, unrestrained driver.

Now if 150 million Americans refused to file a tax return, you would clearly see what is criminal and what is not. There is no such category as undocumented taxpayer. Such a thing does not exist, nor would it be tolerated. If the government cannot envision a way to round up a paltry 12 or 13 million illegal aliens, how could they ever deal with 150 million undocumented taxpayers?

Fortunately, the majority of Americans are far too wayward to ever be herded into such a box as to be labeled undocumented taxpayers. They are far too contrarian for that. With a devil take the hindmost attitude they will continue to file tax returns, refrain from murdering anyone, abstain from robbing their local bank, and a myriad of other eccentric notions.

Illegal aliens are not criminalsthey are merely economic opportunists. They have grown, at least in the eyes of the progressive media, from illegal aliens, to undocumented workers, to economic opportunists, to in the eyes of some, freedom fighters attempting to reclaim the Southwestern United States from the American interlopers. Whatever label we apply to them, they are not criminals. They are our invited guests.

In a recent article in Human Events, Mac Johnson states, the illegal alien invasion has been an invited one caused by government sending the wrong signals about border enforcement. The only signal coming from Washington appears to be an open invitation. And an RSVP is neither needed nor desired.

James Carafone of The Heritage Foundation sums it up nicely. Curbing illegal entry and unlawful presence will require enforcing immigration laws. That is something our government apparently cannot bring itself to accomplish. The most frustrating aspect of this situation is the evident inability of the government to do anything about it. In fact, the only thing our major political parties seem to be able to agree on isto do nothing about the borders.

And therein lays another problem. This discussion has been framed so long by politicians and pundits alike in terms like, Americans wont do these jobs, we need the illegal workers, and we cant deport 12 million illegal aliens that these false premises seem to now be taken as truth.

There is one certain way to resolve this issue. When Congress next considers immigration reform, include in the legislation a provision that membership in a US labor union must accompany each green card. The available employment opportunities for illegal aliens would dry up overnight.
